The Beginning, Bigger Friction - The Wax Horse Head Creature (Sculpting)

Something that I just recently noticed is that, the more I am thinking about working on the Horse Head creature sculpt, the bigger friction the friction that I feel.

To be honest, even when doing 2D Illustration/Sketches is much 'easier' to start than doing a sculpt. In this blog entry, I want to explore why

Before we started the blog entry in detail, here are the early sculpt screenshots of the 3D Sculpt of the wax horse head.

My approach to the direction of this sculpt is to basically make it a 'crying wax horse', with more of a 'caroussel-feel'

And this is the latest update that I had

Then recently, a question just recently came to my head:

"Do I feel the should make it moveable like a puppet, or is it that I am afraid of the idea of moveable object?"

I have quite a harsh Engineering project in University. The deadline was quite harsh too, with the scope as well. I do have a feeling that the project should really 'teach you' first hand that you will definitely not do well in the first try so therefore bring it to the next stage even after the class. But it really made me feel like 'I am not suitable to be an Engineer'.

One thing that got me hard was the 'Servo motor' project. It was an Arduino Uno project, in which it used a software to move the servo motor via your own drag-and-drop programming. I managed to make it move, however then it just refused to move afterwards. And to this day, I thought that I should not make any moveable object/prototype anymore.

Or, so I thought, until this puppet project.

All I can say is that, this project will be another challenge not on the prototype-making itself, but to my past self that I refused to come terms with for very long time.

So I thought to break this project Wax Horse Head into several Milestones. I think it's great to think big project like this to milestones.

Here are the ones I have thought of:

  1. Low-Res Big Shape Sculpture Head
  2. Highpoly Sculpture, focusing on the details
  3. Moving Puppet parts planning: Ears, Neck, Mouth
  4. Static 3D-Printed prototype for airbrush/color reference
  5. Material Test for the flexible resin, and Assembly test
  6. Revisions, assembly test, casting (if necessary), moving range test
  7. Paintjob for the static 3D-Printed Prototype
  8. Paintjob for the moving puppet
  9. Taking photos for the moving puppet, and moving part demonstrations
  10. Social media post

I think that's all for now, the milestones may change within times as necessary. I hope you enjoy today's project blog entry, and I'll see you on the next one!
